Commentary The “Sam's Junk Yard Coming Soon" sign was down Thursday at Sam Searcy's property on Hwy 108, and the cars were gone The sign, and two junk cars parked behind it. caused quite a stir this week as people contemplated a man's right to do anything — anything he wanis - with his properly, no matter how it affects the community at large. Searcy's property is just part of a controversy surrounding the Hwy. 108 area near Beechwood subdivision. The Town of Columbus was sued by three residents of Beechwood for rezoning a portion of that area Highway Commercial, to make way for the relocation of TLC Chevrolet/GEO Searcy's property was not within the Columbus Town limits, but Beechwood residents unhappy with his site develop ment efforts apparently expressed their ire to him directly — and not so politely, according to some accounts. Not long after, the cars and "junk yard" sign appeared As this chapter in Polk County history now closes, the issues it raised continue. County officials were still checking to see if. in fact, the county had zoned Searcy's property in 1973. Others were debating the pros and cons of zoning, and others the issue of who has full rights of citizenship in Polk County — native born residents AND new arrivals, or native born residents Continued On Back Page Robert Briggs, son of Mr and Mrs Robert Briggs of Landrum has enlisted in the United States Air Force A 1989 graduate of Landrum High School, he is taking basic training at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio.
